Homage to painters – Yitzhak Nir, painter and pilot

In the ‘Homage to painters’ series, Yitzhak Nir, painter and fighter pilot, enters into a dialogue with artists who influenced him. ‘Brushes’ is a homage to Jan Vermeer (1632–1675); ‘Memories’ (1976–1978) is a self-portrait in homage to Salvador Dalí, in oil on canvas; and ‘Shay’ (1978–1980) is a self-portrait with his son, in homage to M.C. Escher, in oil and tempera.

The works show Nir’s precision and realistic technique, and the humour and imagination with which he incorporates himself and his family into the visual language of other artists.
